Midwifery First year of practice

2007 saw  the commencement of the Midwifery First Year of Practice programme (MFYP). Funded by government through the Clinical Training Agency (CTA), the programme is managed and provided by the New Zealand College of Midwives.

New Zealand registered new graduate midwives are eligible to participate in the programme which provides, over 12 months, funded release time for:

  • mentoring and support of the graduate midwife from a named and chosen mentor (32 - 56 hours including 8 face to face meetings)
  • education and development for the graduate midwife, including 69 - 91 hours for:
    • introductory workshop
    • neonatal resuscitation workshop
    • adult resuscitation workshop
    • perinatal mortality meeting
    • MSR preparation workshop
    • elective education options
    • professional development
  • midwifery practice experiences which are individually negotiated by the graduate midwife in conjunction with her mentor and group practice or DHB employer as appropriate and including orientation and familiarisation with practice setting that is opposite to that where graduate midwife is working , eg. DHB or community
  • feedback sessions (at 3 months and 9 months) where the graduate midwife, mentor and a midwife representing the DHB or community constructively discuss the graduate midwife's communication and practice processes across the interface between primary, secondary and tertiary maternity care
  • MFYP Midwifery Standards Review (MSR) for the graduate midwife at end of programme
  • mentor development workshop

The New Zealand College of Midwives contacts final year midwifery students to make them aware of the programme and encourage enrolment. However, you can also find out more from the College website. Click here to find the Midwifery First Year of Practice pages.
