How to Join the Staff

When vacancies arise position descriptions will be developed. If you are thinking of moving into midwifery education you can prepare yourself by ensuring that you meet the minimum standards for midwifery educators as set by the Midwifery Council of New Zealand. These are:
- New Zealand registered midwife
- Minimum of five years post-registration midwifery practice experience
- Minimum of a relevant postgraduate qualification (eg. Postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma) and enrolled in a master’s degree within two years of appointment
- Hold a recognised teaching qualification or complete such a qualification within two years of appointment
- Complete a Treaty of Waitangi workshop and a Midwifery Council approved course in Cultural Safety and Turanga Kaupapa within one year of appointment
- Midwife teachers responsible for teaching midwifery practice subjects and assessing students in midwifery practice must hold an Annual Practising Certificate
Note that while the majority of midwife teachers and those with course/paper coordination or programme management responsibilities must meet the standards for qualifications and experience, schools of midwifery may employ midwives without these qualifications on a part-time or casual basis as long as they are appropriately supervised and supported. For example, midwives preparing for a teaching career may wish to gain some teaching experience while undertaking postgraduate study or gaining a teaching qualification.
