Welcome Midwives

Welcome to the section of Midwifery Junction that is especially for midwives. Midwifery staff and students at Otago Polytechnic and CPIT are very fortunate to be supported by midwives throughout the South Island,  the North Island and outside of New Zealand. The practical teaching and role modelling these midwives provide is invaluable to the learning of midwifery students and plays a big part in shaping the midwives they will become.  The partnership of midwifery educators and practising midwives is essential to a holistic midwifery education that blends theory and practice, and both groups contribute equally.

This section of the website provides Preceptorship Resources that we hope will help support you in the role. As a preceptor you will have free access to these resources which comprise seven modules. Completion of each module will gain Midwifery Council elective education points and once you have completed all seven modules you will have gone a long way towards completing a postgraduate midwifery course in preceptorship at Otago Polytechnic. (You may want to enrol later to complete the final requirements).

The Professional Development button will link you to other resources for midwives. Soon we will add resources on cultural competence and we plan to add other short courses as they become available. Let us know what else would be helpful and we will see what we can provide.

Midwifery Practice Topics include links to short modules on clinical issues.  The Midwifery Council has allocated one point per topic.

The Discussion Forum is only accessible to midwives. If you are currently a preceptor for our students or have been in the past you can participate in this discussion forum. Contact us (using the tag below) and provide your name, username, password and email address and we will load you onto the site as a midiwfe who can access the discussion forum. You can change your password once you log in for the first time. The discussion forum is a place where you can talk to other midwives about working with students and to share ideas about how to make this work well for everyone. Or you can discuss any topic of interest to midwives – it is your forum.

You may be interested in looking at the Bachelor of Midwifery online resources that the students are accessing. Initially we expect to provide 'tasters' of some of these resources so that you can see what students are learning and how the online component of the programme complements the midwifery practice learning opportunities that you provide. Later we hope to provide you with fuller access to the online learning resources.

The section on Postgraduate Studies provides information and links to three postgraduate midwifery programmes offered by Otago Polytechnic; the Postgraduate Certificate in Midwifery Practice, the Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery and the Master of Midwifery.  These programmes feature short seven-week online courses focused on midwifery practice and provide a very accessible way to develop practice and gain postgraduate qualifications.

Note that on the home page of Midwifery Junction there is a link called Digital Toolbox. This link will take you to resources that will help you find out more about using your computer and online learning tools.
